Implant dentistry continues to make wonderful advances in its applications, biomechanics, and success rates. Although there are many ways in which we can utilize dental implants, they are primarily used to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are small posts that are made to replace the natural root of a tooth. They are made out of titanium and are surgically inserted into the bone of the jaw. They are made out of titanium and the biologic process in which the implant is secured to the bone is called osseointegration. An oral surgeon or periodontist usually places the implant. Our role is to restore the implant. An example of one kind of restoration is to fabricate and attach a crown onto the implant.
We plan the treatment, explain to the patient all aspects of the process, guide the communication with the surgeon, and finish by restoring the implant. From a clinical standpoint, dental implant success rates are virtually unmatched and have given patients an option to replace a missing tooth that very closely simulates the real thing. Additionally, the clinical process is not marked by pain, and the techniques may be considered, at times, easier than traditional dentistry.
